CTCSOL (Certificate for Teachers of Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages) was launched in Singapore last year and HSK Centre (Crestar) is the only exam centre in the country. It is a standardized test administered by Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban). The test assesses the suitability of candidates to serve as international Chinese language teachers based on their abilities in the following 5 domains:
1. Basics in Chinese Language Teaching
2. Chinese Language Teaching Methodology
3. Instructional Design and Classroom Management
4. Chinese Culture and Cross-cultural Communication
5. Professional Ethics and Disciplinary Development.

Due to its high standard and international recognition, the certificate serves as an important reference for international schools and educational institutions here in their assessment and recruitment of Chinese language teachers.

“In Singapore, many international schools have adopted CTCSOL as a qualification reference or as a benchmark for recruiting Chinese language teachers. CTCSOL’s strict system of assessment has gained international recognition among educational institutions. We are confident that in the years ahead more Chinese language teachers in Singapore will find it beneficial to attain the CTCSOL,” said Ms Duan Li, Director of the Test Division at Hanban, who was one of the special guests at the presentation ceremony.

The pioneer batch of 30 teachers who sat for the CTCSOL Test in Singapore, were awarded their certificates at a ceremony held at the Seameo Regional Language Centre on 3rd May 2016. The presentation, organised by HSK Centre (Crestar) and Confucious Classroom, was witnessed by some 170 guests and friends.

Previous oral test interviewers and course instructors were invited to share some tips on the oral test and give practical advice to those interested in taking the test in future. Three of the certificate recipients also shared their experience in their preparation for the test.

Ms Sophie Heylin, an oral English trainer at HSK Centre (Crestar), advised potential candidates to use English more often in their conversations as it can help them to teach English speaking students to learn Chinese more effectively. She was formerly a Professional Language Analyst at the Overseas Family School.
